Derains & Gharavi is constantly looking for passionate, motivated, team-oriented interns and associates with diverse backgrounds and language skills to join its team and fully conscient that it is work, training, experience and exposure that are essential to growth.
The firm ensures that its associates’ workload remains balanced with a diversity of cases from all perspectives (commercial/investment, counsel/secretary, and sports law based on affinity) via monitoring and regular assessments of the same by a liaison partner and associate.
The firm also takes pride in here again an avant garde move in extending to its associates with a proven track record and seniority at the firm a rewarding financial package which can include at times a variable portion based on meritocracy driven by quality and not just quantity so that they reap a share of what they have contributed to the firm without awaiting partnership.
The firm has since 2025 has engaged in implementing a “work hard play hard” policy that puts emphasis on a healthy work-personal life balance via monitoring and regular assessments of the same by partner and associate liaisons and possibility for associates that have had sufficient training and seniority at the firm to work remotely periodically.
The firm implements a daily informal yet casual chic dress code save when otherwise required for client meetings and hearings.
The firm engages in firm, client and charitable events with associates around sports and art in line with its practice areas.
Interns
- The firm recruits 5 to 8 interns yearly.
- Our internship program is thus designed to groom our interns for a potential junior associate position within or outside our firm, with a Senior Associate assigned to each intern in order to follow their progress, as well as their exposure to a diversity of tasks with all associates and partners.
Associates
- The firm’s policy is to recruit junior associates from its pool of interns and to privilege promotion of partners in turn from the pool of associates as was the case of Emmanuel Foy.
- True to its avant-garde origins, the firm does not implement a strict hierarchy among its associates, which are all equally implicated in all stages of counsel cases (from legal research, to drafting and strategic decisions), as well as allocated administrative or support roles in arbitrator mandates based on meritocracy and their capabilities independently of their seniority.
- Our associates are all encouraged to take on as much responsibility as they are able to take on each case, as well as to participate to the development of the firm, with internal training sessions (including on drafting and oral pleadings) being regularly provided.
- In addition to a strong legal background in arbitration and private/public international law, the qualities we look for the most in candidates looking to join our team are passion for practice, attention to details, drafting, language skills, good judgment, empathy, multiculturalism, savoir-vivre, the ability to think outside of the box, to anticipate issues and propose solutions, the ability to adapt and progress, a pleasant personality able to work as part of a team and complementarity and diversity.
